Course Description:

This course seeks to provide an opportunity for students to learn about the cultural histories of diverse indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island, with an emphasis on the cultural histories of the students present in the circle. Students will learn from traditional oral storytellers and scholars of oral tradition about cultural history pre-contact to the present. This learning circle will touch on plains history, six nations history, and the histories of Cree and Anishinaabe from Northern Manitoba and Ontario. Students will also be given the space to share their learning around a person, place, event, or custom in an oral storytelling manner.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To gain an increased understanding of oral tradition learning. “Story teaches but does not lecture” – Stecley
  2. To outline an overview of life in diverse and dynamic indigenous communities from prior to contact to the present day, with focus on the communities of the students who are present.
  3. To provide an opportunity for students to learn about the diverse historical backgrounds of one another in the circle.
  4. To learn skills in self-reflection of one’s own learning process: (the 3 L’s) – Look, Listen, Learn, while employing respect that others in the circle will learn at their own rate, and may look, listen and learn different things.
  5. To strengthen and practice oral presentation skills
