SUMMARY:HS1 - Introduction to Hebrew Scriptures: The Old Testament Learning Circle & Continuing Education Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:The resource for this week is Dan Epp-Tiessen\, Emeritus Associate Professor of Bible at CMU. Dan’s specialty is Old Testament\, and he also appreciates the opportunity to teach courses that span the entire Bible. \nThis course will introduce students to Israel’s story as told in the Old Testament (Hebrew Scriptures). The course will show how this story is foundational for the ministry of Jesus and for understanding how the New Testament writers describe the healing and salvation that God makes available through Jesus. As we explore Israel’s story\, we will pay attention to how this story can inform\, shape\, and inspire the lives of Jesus-followers today. We will also pay attention to how Israel’s story connects with the experiences of Indigenous peoples on Turtle Island\, even as it differs significantly from that experience.   \n  \nThe course will be divided into the following sections.  \n\nThe story of creation \nThe story of human sin and brokenness (the Fall) \nThe story of how God begins to address human brokenness by forming a people (Israel) \nThe story of liberation from slavery in Egypt \nThe problematic story of genocide and ethnic cleaning (conquering the land of Canaan) \nThe story of Israel’s life in the land of Canaan \nThe story of Israel’s prophets \nThe story of Israel’s defeat\, exile\, and restoration \nThe story of Israel’s worship \nThe story of Israel’s wisdom \nThe story that yearns for God’s future healing and liberation \n\n  \nWe welcome guest learners to join our students in this circle. \nContact connect@sandysaulteaux.ca with questions and to register.

SUMMARY:Lateral Violence - Working Towards Solutions Learning Circle & Continuing Education Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:Lateral violence occurs when harmful behaviours we experience show up in our interactions with others. It is expressed in many forms including lack of trust\, favouritism\, and poor communication – these issues typically lead to conflict between individuals or within an entire group. Moving beyond the cycle of lateral violence begins with people becoming aware of its causes and impacts. \nThis Learning Circle\, led by Crisis & Trauma Resource Institute\, will explore the various dynamics of lateral violence and offers solutions for prevention. Participants will develop better personal awareness and enhance their communication and conflict resolution skills. \nWe welcome guest learners to join our students in this circle. \nContact connect@sandysaulteaux.ca with questions and to register.

SUMMARY:Our Story in Our Language
DESCRIPTION:2022 is the UN Year of Indigenous Languages. \nJoin Susie McPherson Derendy & Adrian Jacobs for a Many Nations Virtual Teachings House on the Vision of Indigenous Testamur. \nThe buried history of colonialism has been revealed in unmarked graves at Residential Schools. Recovery of Indigenous languages and cultures is our path forward. In a series of online multi-lingual conversations\, we’ll explore what community leadership training means for Indigenous communities of faith. Listen in and perhaps offer a story from your experience for the journey we’re on to say who we are and where we’re going. \nRegister below. Tickets are $25/session or $75 for the 5-part series. \nAll sessions start at 10:00 AM Central on the second last Saturday of the month. \nRegistration deadline is the Thursday before each session. Zoom links for each session will be sent to participants on the Friday before each session. Recordings of each session will be made available to ticket holders in the following week. \n\nColonialism took community control away from us and placed it in a colonial center of authority. Recovery from colonialism is our path moving forward. We will determine an Indigenous Testamur\, a training program for ministry preparation\, that will help our leaders be competent as the healers and helpers our communities are crying out for. – Calls to the Church by the Caretakers of Our Indigenous Circle \nLearn more:\nLearn more about the Calls to the Church\, especially #4\, here. \nLearn more about Indigenous Testamur here. \n  \nRegister:

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Mamawe Ota Askihk: Sharing Life Together Here on Earth
DESCRIPTION:It is with deep regret that SSSC has decided to cancel the Mamawe Ota Askihk in-person event this coming weekend Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th. Due to the recent alarming spike of Covid-19 infections in Manitoba and out of an abundance of caution we do not want an event meant to promote well-being to be an occasion contributing to the pandemic. It is notable that Indigenous communities across Canada have largely been spared in this pandemic because of measures taken to protect their communities. We will do the same. \n— \n  \nGather with Indigenous and settler allies to reclaim the homegrown\, the homespoken\, the homebred\, and the homemade. \nWe are re-envisioning our annual event in light of the current health guidelines to reduce the transmission of COVID-19. \nTwo days of outdoor learning from the land and each other. Activities include hand drum making\, rattle making\, a medicine walk\, sage picking\, composting workshop\, farm tour at Ploughshares Community Farm\, clay art\, screen printing and outdoor cooking. \nCome root yourself in an understanding of the land as our health. Share in the spiritual teaching\, laughter\, and new learning. And most importantly\, taste the beauty of friendships formed through nurturing one another as the earth nurtures us. \n  \nRegistration: \nEach day’s program will begin at 9:00 am and end after supper\, around 6:30 pm. On Friday there will be an optional evening fireside sharing circle at 7:00 pm. \nSpace is limited and we are committed to having a balance of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people participate. \nIn-person participants will receive lunch\, supper and snacks. Overnight accommodations are not available on site. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent\, guardian or caregiver. \nBring a light coloured t-shirt if you would like to screen print it with the Mamawe Ota Askihk logo. \nVirtual participation through video conferencing will also be available for portions of the event. \nIf you would like to attend please fill out the online registration form. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Marcus at 204-205-0664 or email at Marcus@sandysaulteaux.ca \n  \nFees: \nOne day in-person: $75 \nTwo days in- person: $125 \nTwo days through Zoom video conference: $25 \nAdditional fee for making a hand drum: $100\nAdditional fee for making a rattle: $25 \n  \nPayment options: \nE-transfer sent to Robert@sandysaulteaux.ca \nTelephone 204-268-3913 for registration by credit card \nFax 204-268-4463 for registration by credit card \nIn person registration at SSSC Office by appointment at 204-268-3913 \n  \nIf these fees are a barrier to you\, please contact us. Funding is available to cover the travel and registration of Indigenous participants. \n  \n  \nHealth protocol: \nSSSC will enforce social distancing and sanitization protocols in compliance with MB Public Health orders. Failure by attendees to follow these instructions may result in their dismissal or cancellation of the event. Parents/caregivers are responsible for ensuring that their children practice social distancing.
