Come to be challenged and inspired!\n  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER. \n\nThe United Church’s Indigenous-Racialized Youth Scholars program was created to be a space where youth can give voice to a new generation who seek to move the church towards a growth while being their authentic selves. Through creative expression\, including prose and poetry\, the scholars tackled issues close to their hearts\, reflecting on their experiences and delving into Canadian history and racism’s impact on their generation.\n\nNow they want to share what they’ve learned and pass on the excitement\, the passion\, and the commitment that has brought such meaning into their own lives.\n\nWe’ll hear from:\n\nEli Dunlap\nI’m Elijah (Eli)(they/them) I am a 26-year-old mixed (Anishinaabe/Nehiyaw/Tsalagi/Settler\,) Two-Spirit\, musician\, actor and writer who loves animals\, nature\, learning\, engaging with community and so much more. I grew up in The United Church of Canada\, in a small rural Nova Scotia congregation\, and attended church camp for many years both as a camper and then a counselor. I am currently completing my undergraduate degree in Sociology with a minor in Law and Society at Acadia University. My research topic extended nicely from the work I had been doing this past academic year in school with focus on Indigenous Youth Suicide\, I expanded my scope for this project to focus specifically on environmental racism- particularly water injustice- and how that connects and contributes to the disproportionate rates of Indigenous Youth Suicide.\n\nSarah Yang\nSarah is a first-year university student\, currently studying in Hamilton Ontario. She is of Korean descent but grew up in Manitoba\, attending Teulon and Balmoral United Church. Sarah’s research topic covers the ways in which Racialized and Indigenous peoples may interact with capitalism and colonialism as embedded into culture and psychological mindsets. Sarah appreciates good music\, vintage\, and wishes to write a book within her lifetime.\n\nMackayla Taylor\nTansi\, Aaniin\, Nizho Misko Miigoganog/Nisomihkokwanak Nitisinikâson. Nîci-înînîmâkânân môniyâw iskwâhtêm Mackayla. Hello! My Spirit name is Two Red Feathers\, and my English name is Mackayla Taylor. I am 19 years old and currently a university student in Treaty 1 territory working towards a degree in Social Work and Gender studies to eventually become an action therapist and help those in the foster care system regain confidence in their Indigeneity. My research topic is “The Impacts of ‘Pretendian’ Identities on Indigenous Communities and how the United Church of Canada plays a role. I am mixed Indigenous and queer. I have attended Atlantic Garden City United Church ever since I was younger. I love beading\, sewing\, spending time with my family\, and reconnecting to my culture. Although we all have different views\, I hope that when reading and listening to my paper\, it sparks an interest in further learning and education on topics that aren’t discuss widely. There will be time for listening\, sharing\, singing\, ceremony and sharing good food together. Come root yourself in an understanding of the land as our health. Share in the spiritual teaching\, laughter\, and new learning. And most importantly\, taste the beauty of friendships formed through nurturing one another as the earth nurtures us. \n\n\nFood for us comes from our relatives\, whether they have wings or fins or roots. That is how we consider food. Food has a culture. It has a history. It has a story. Youth and children will have opportunities to participate in some activities with their families and other times to connect with other youth and children with the guidance of our youth leaders. \nWe will share meals together three times a day. DESCRIPTION:Join us in erecting our tipi at the entrance to our Centre. \nTeachings\, teamwork\, time on the land\, and a whole lot of fun are included! \nThe day will end with a community potluck feast.  \nPlease bring a dish of food to share. \nAll ages welcome. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent\, guardian or caregiver.\n \n\n\n\n  \nThis event was made possible with grants from Healthy Together Now and the Brokenhead River Community Foundation – Meegwetch! \n  \nAcessibility: \nThe tipi raising portion of this event will take place outside. The ground is mostly grass covered and may be uneven. After a rain\, the ground may be soft and muddy.\n \nShelter from the weather is available under our open-side pavilion\, on a concrete pad.\n \nLimited outdoor seating is available. Participants are welcome to bring their own chairs or blankets for sitting on the ground.\n \nPresenters will not have their voices amplified.\n \nIndoor washrooms are available. \nParking is available on site\, a short distance from where we will be gathering. There will be program activities two evenings and optional activities two evenings. SUMMARY:Indigenous Family Wellness Learning Circle Part 2\, with Patricia Vickers
DESCRIPTION:Indigenous Perspectives of Healing PTSD with Patricia Vickers\, PhD  \nOutline: Senator Murray Sinclair\, as the Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada\, heard thousands of accounts from Indian Residential School survivors.  The discovery of child remains at Indian Residential Schools across Canada has brought into Canadian consciousness the historical atrocities that have impacted Indigenous peoples for generations. \nThis three day training is an introduction to the neurobiology of trauma grounded in Indigenous approaches to healing and spiritual balance and includes: \n\nAn overview of the neurobiology of trauma in relation to Indigenous history\nPsychosocial conditioning as it applies to conditioning and possibility\nCultural teachings\, language and principles that support transformational change\nSpiritual practices that support transformational change\nPractical exercises for self-regulations\nResources to support ongoing learning\n\nPatricia Vickers\, PhD \nDr. Vickers\, through her mother’s adoption by an Eagle Chief\, is a member of the Eagle clan from the village of Gitxaala\, British Columbia and carries a feast hall name from her village as well as from the Nuxalk Nation in Bella Coola\, British Columbia. With the help of neurofeedback\, altered-state of consciousness inquiry\, and traditional ceremonies\, she teaches spiritual transformation\, healing trauma\, awakening\, forgiveness\, and unearthing layers to find the authentic self. \nIndigenous Family Wellness Learning Circle Registration Form \nTo register\, complete and return the registration form with payment. \nWorkshop runs from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm each day. SUMMARY:Indigenous Family Wellness Learning Circle Part 1\, with Jann Derrick
DESCRIPTION:Indigenous Family Training\, Rewrapping our Families with Jann Derrick\, PhD\n \nOutline \nIt is key to understand that Indigenous families are communal based. This is an entirely different perspective than the nuclear-based family. Relationships are essential\, as are roles. Without understanding relationships as the focus\, it can be perplexing and difficult when applying the individualistic approaches of the mainstream when working with Aboriginal families. \nThis training will provide an introduction into viewing families as a system; a collection of relationships\, individuals\, roles\, values and beliefs. This highlights the wholistic view of the traditional Indigenous family. Colonization brought changes to Indigenous families and communities and unwrapped the family system to a large degree. \nJann teaches using a traditional systemic and experiential approach combined with didactic summaries. \nThis training will focus on: \n\nViewing the family as a system\nViewing the family now following colonization; its strength and its resistance\nSpecific themes common in families now: attachment challenges\, multiple losses and grief\, intergenerational trauma\, survivorship tools\, healing paradigms\nTools and wholistic approaches for helpers who walk beside the family members\n\nEach workshop will be geared to the context of the participants and their roles in walking beside Indigenous families. \nJann Derrick\, PhD \nJann has been in practice as a Registered Family Therapist since 1978. She is passionate about children and their return to the center of their families and communities.  Jann is of Irish\, English and Haudensaunee ancestry and specializes in working with families\, parents and communities in order that children can once again be safe\, know their identity and where they belong.  She is skilled in working with Indigenous Historical Trauma\, Residential School trauma\, and its intergenerational effects in families and communities. \nJann devotes her time to mentoring and teaching frontline workers and professionals\, supporting service delivery to Indigenous communities\, and writing and publishing. \nIndigenous Family Wellness Learning Circle Registration Form \nTo register\, complete and return the registration form with payment. \nWorkshop runs from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm each day. DESCRIPTION:The resource for this week is Dan Epp-Tiessen\, Emeritus Associate Professor of Bible at CMU. Dan’s specialty is Old Testament\, and he also appreciates the opportunity to teach courses that span the entire Bible.  \nThis course will introduce students to Israel’s story as told in the Old Testament (Hebrew Scriptures). The course will show how this story is foundational for the ministry of Jesus and for understanding how the New Testament writers describe the healing and salvation that God makes available through Jesus. As we explore Israel’s story\, we will pay attention to how this story can inform\, shape\, and inspire the lives of Jesus-followers today. DESCRIPTION:Every autumn for many years\, we hold a Four Directions Walk\, visiting each corner of the land here\, tying up new prayer flags in each of the four directions\, and retiring the prayer flags that have flown since last autumn. \nWe’ll begin the walk at 12:45 pm and conclude in time for our Annual General Meeting (AGM) beginning at 2:00 pm. \nGet to know the land here and help us begin our Annual General Meeting\, grounded in the land that sustains us. There will be time for listening\, sharing\, singing\, ceremony and sharing good food together. Come root yourself in an understanding of the land as our health. Share in the spiritual teaching\, laughter\, and new learning. And most importantly\, taste the beauty of friendships formed through nurturing one another as the earth nurtures us. \n\n\nFood for us comes from our relatives\, whether they have wings or fins or roots. That is how we consider food. Food has a culture. It has a history. It has a story. It has relationships.–Winona LaDuke\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPROGRAM\nREGISTRATION\nCOST\nTRANSPORTATION & ACCOMMODATION\nCONTACT\n \n\n  \n  \n  \n  \nPROGRAM \nWe will gather every morning for ceremony and teachings. \nParticipants will be able to move between hands-on activity stations throughout the day as they wish. We expect to make hand drums\, sew ribbon skirts\, smoke meat\, break down a beef quarter and chicken or geese\, go on a wetlands walk\, pressure can meat\, ride horses\, pick sage\, hold a sweat ceremony\, learn drum songs\, work in the garden and more. Schedule coming soon! \nAll ages are welcome to participate in all activities. Youth and children will have opportunities to participate in some activities with their families and other times to connect with other youth and children with the guidance of our youth leaders. \nWe will share meals together three times a day. An evening fire will follow the dinner-hour for sharing stories of land and healing. \nParticipants will be invited to contribute to the week by helping in the kitchen\, leading music\, sharing their experience at the different activity stations\, teaching a game or physical exercise and/or telling a story around the fire. \nThe program runs from breakfast at 8:00 am on Monday morning until our closing circle wraps up at 8:00 pm on Friday night. \nParticipants are welcome to arrive as early as 6:00 pm on Sunday\, August 20 (evening snacks will be provided) and stay until 10 am on Saturday\, August 26 (breakfast will be provided). \nReturn to top. \n  \n\n\n  \n  \n\n  \n  \n  \n  \nREGISTRATION – FULL\n \n\nIf you would like to be notified if spots become available\, click here to add your name to the wait list. \n\nAll ages are welcome. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent\, guardian or caregiver. \nSpace is limited and we are committed to having a balance of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people participate. \n\n\n  \nOnce you’ve registered\, you’ll be directed to make an online payment to secure your spot\, or wait for confirmation that any bursary you have requested is available.\n \nReturn to top. \n  \n  \n\n  \n  \n  \n  \nCOST \nRegistration and accommodation fees help us prepare for an incredible week of hands-on learning\, acquire the supplies and good food for enjoying together\, cover travel for elders and teachers and recognize the time and contributions of the hosts and organizers. \nRegistration: $350 (per person) \nAll meals and snacks\, Monday-Friday\, are included\, plus the choice of making a ribbon skirt or hand drum you can take home.  \nIf you are checking in on Sunday night (instead of Monday morning)\, an extra evening snack will be included. \n If you are checking out on Saturday morning (instead of Friday night)\, an extra breakfast will be included.\n \n  \nPLUS \n  \nCamping accommodations (per person): $50 \nYou can pitch your tent on the Sandy-Saulteaux Spiritual Centre grounds and will have access to shared washroom facilities on site. \nOR \nIndoor accommodations (price varies according to room): $300-$500  \nYou will stay in a guest lodge on site. Individual or shared rooms are available. We have a small amount of funding available to assist with the transportation costs of Indigenous participants.
